North Star Conversations Transcript: PMT—What to Expect | Mind Chicago

Lee Wells explains how Parent Management Training (PMT) supports parents of older children through skill-building, family system insights, and real-time practice‚ with results that often appear quickly.

Could you differentiate PCIT, which I realize is for younger children, with PMT, which you described earlier as being better suited for older children?

Lee Wells (00:07)

Very similar strategies, very similar approaches. It takes into consideration that an older child has a little bit different ability to communicate with their parents, a little bit different ability to make autonomous choices. If you're doing it one on one with a therapist, you're coming in, you're learning skills, and also just talking about your family system, getting support, lots of understanding of how parenting strategies in the past may not be working today. And then every few sessions, your child will come into therapy and will practice some of the skills in real time. People see change incredibly quickly once they implement it. PMT is amazing and we do it in a group format. We also do it individually.
