North Star Conversations Transcript: Neuropsychological Testing Overview—Lisa Novak, Psy.D.

isa Novak provides a clear, step-by-step overview of the neuropsych testing process—from intake to written report—and describes how it differs from psychotherapy or psychiatry.

We are a psychiatry and psychotherapy practice. Half of us do child and adolescent psychiatry, and for that half in particular, neuropsychological testing is extraordinarily important. Could you an overview to interested patients and parents about what neuropsychological testing is and how it differs from meeting with a psychiatrist or a psychotherapist?

Lisa Novak (00:20)

Yeah, it's a great question that we get all the time. The process itself involves a comprehensive clinical interview with the parents, a full record review of anything that might be relevant to the child from school paperwork, prior evaluations, how they're currently scoring. And then we send out questionnaires to parents and teachers. And then we bring the kid into our office. And that's really like the meat and potatoes of what we do, where we're spending hours with the student, really learning all about how they think and process information and use language.

When a parent calls you, what happens then? Nuts and bolts. Just to give an idea of what to expect.

Lisa Novak (00:59)

Nuts and bolts logistics. It starts with a parent intake meeting that's about one hour. We typically hold it virtually. We're happy to do it in person. And that's where we gather that full history and have had a chance, hopefully, to review some records. Then we send out some parent and teacher questionnaires. After that, the student comes in for the testing sessions. And then we score and interpret all of that data. And the next appointment is a results meeting where we get a chance to share with the parents and then separately with the student in a developmentally appropriate way, all of the findings and our specific recommendations for next steps. And then we provide them with a written report that has all of that information that they can then use to pass on to the school team and outside providers.
