Dr. Brandon Gimbel is a board-certified adult psychiatrist and trained psychotherapist and the founder of North Star Behavioral Health. His clinical work emphasizes presence, restraint, and careful attention to the conditions that allow treatment to unfold over time.

He earned his M.D. from Case Western Reserve University and completed his psychiatry residency at the Harvard Longwood Psychiatry Residency Program, where he served as Chief Resident. He completed advanced psychotherapy training through the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute and at Harvard Medical School. Prior to establishing North Star in Illinois, he served on the faculty at Harvard Medical School and worked as a staff psychiatrist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Gimbel is currently on the clinical faculty at Rush University, where he supervises and teaches psychiatry residents.

Dr. Gimbel is the editor of The Hard Work of Healing , a collaborative collection of essays by therapists, clergy, and mindfulness teachers reflecting on what healing looks like in practice. He is also the author of Staying in the Work , reflections on psychiatric care as it unfolds over time, and Just Right Here , an illustrated collection of animal stories for children about presence, boundaries, and quiet connection.

Dr. Gimbel specializes in the treatment of anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, and adult ADHD. While his clinical caseload is currently full, he remains closely involved in patient care through supervision, consultation, and oversight of the practice.

Dr. Gimbel is not currently accepting new patients for ongoing care.

He does offer one-time second-opinion psychiatric consultations for individuals navigating complex or confusing treatment situations. These consultations are thoughtful, time‑intensive evaluations that include advance review of records, an extended consultation, and a written summary with impressions and recommendations.

This service does not include ongoing treatment, prescribing, or follow‑up care. Its purpose is to offer a clear, contained perspective that can help support your current care team or guide next steps.

If you’d like to inquire about a second‑opinion consultation, you may submit our Intake Form and note your interest, or call our office at 847‑892‑7300 x9.
